　　本書從1987年初版到1997年修訂版的問世，直到2004年6月，本書重印20多次，先后發(fā)行10萬余冊；本書是第三版，對原書進行了全面修訂，特別對第二章和第四章作了較大的修改和補充；補充了詞源學的定義。采用歷時分析的方法，講述了許多語匯的有趣故事，每個例詞都注明出現(xiàn)的年代、詞義的演變及同源詞的比較等；增加了語義學中的上下義關(guān)系，并選擇20個常用詞，用大量的同義詞、反義詞進行對比；對新詞的定義作了具體的補充，明確了新詞的時間性原則。本書新詞的選擇標準定在20世紀60年代到90年代末的40年間，一個突出的特點就是在新詞（包括現(xiàn)有詞匯）后面注明了出現(xiàn)的年代；隨著語言簡化的趨勢，對次要構(gòu)詞法也作了較大的修改和補充，例詞后注明了出現(xiàn)的年代或世紀及其含義；增加了美國詞典常用的韋氏音標和英國常用的國際音標對照表；闡述了詞典的新定義。論述了從傳統(tǒng)的用紙張裝幀的詞典，逐步發(fā)展到現(xiàn)代的電子詞典以及不同形式的電子出版物；附錄中增加了本書詞匯學術(shù)語英漢對照表；內(nèi)容新穎、材料翔實，反映了20世紀80年代、90年代及21世紀初英語語言的新發(fā)展。
