本教材旨在幫助讀者擴大英語詞匯量，提高快速閱讀速度和增強閱讀理解能力，從而廣泛深入地了解有關(guān)歷史、文化、經(jīng)濟、風俗、人情以及自然科學和人文科學方面的信息。本教材著重學生英語快速閱讀策略和技巧的培養(yǎng)，通過本教材系統(tǒng)、科學的強化訓練，學生的英語閱讀速度可以在短時間內(nèi)得到大幅度提高。本教材是依據(jù)新頒布的《大學英語教學大綱》（修訂版）關(guān)于大學英語四六級學生的快速閱讀速度要求和《關(guān)于試點階段的大學英語四級考試說明》，設(shè)計的單元練習。在練習設(shè)計上編者沒有以語言為中心的舊模式側(cè)重弄清每一個細節(jié)和看懂每一個詞，而是側(cè)重培養(yǎng)學生正確理解文章的大意、抓住主要事實和有關(guān)細節(jié)的能力，以及快速瀏覽和查讀能力。題型的設(shè)計包括是非判斷、句子填空和多項選擇，練習數(shù)量為七題。同時編者還給出了每篇文章閱讀所需要的時間，以供讀者參考。對于篇幅少長且難度較大的文章可放慢閱讀速度。本教材適合我國高校非英語專業(yè)大學一年級第二學期開設(shè)快速閱讀課使用、也可作為中六級強化班的培訓教材，同時也適合參加托福、GRE、雅思、考研等種英語考試的廣大考生學習使用。
