　　本書作者指出翻譯不僅僅是語言層次上的轉(zhuǎn)換，它更是譯者對(duì)原作所進(jìn)行的文化層面上的改寫。作者在書中引進(jìn)了“改寫”（rewriting）這個(gè)重要概念，它泛指對(duì)文學(xué)原作進(jìn)行的翻譯、改寫、編撰選集（anthology）、批評(píng)（criticism）和編輯（editing）等各種加工和調(diào)整的過程。作者指出，在不同的歷史條件下，改寫主要受到意識(shí)形態(tài)（ideology）和詩學(xué)形態(tài)（poetology）兩方面的限制。改寫者往往會(huì)對(duì)原作進(jìn)行一定程度上的調(diào)整，以使其與改寫者所處時(shí)期主流意識(shí)形態(tài)和詩學(xué)形態(tài)相符，從而達(dá)到讓改寫的作品被盡可能多的讀者接受的目的。　本書在論證的過程中，引用了多國歷代文學(xué)名著的翻譯實(shí)例，分析研究了他們?cè)诓煌瑫r(shí)期被不同的人進(jìn)行改寫的過程。這些實(shí)例都具有相當(dāng)濃厚的文化色彩和時(shí)代代表性，令讀者在熟悉翻譯理論的同時(shí)能夠領(lǐng)略到世界文學(xué)殿堂的奧妙。
