  自由主動(dòng)詞匯是指能夠被人們自主運(yùn)用的詞匯。自由主動(dòng)詞匯的重要性不言而喻,它在一定程度上決定了說(shuō)話和寫作的質(zhì)量。然而,自由主動(dòng)詞匯似乎較難習(xí)得,即使是高水平的英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)者,他們?cè)诳陬^和書(shū)面表達(dá)中的用詞都十分有限。早在1991年,Laufer就發(fā)現(xiàn)在二語(yǔ)自由主動(dòng)詞匯的發(fā)展過(guò)程中存在停滯現(xiàn)象。他發(fā)現(xiàn)在學(xué)習(xí)者的學(xué)習(xí)過(guò)程中,自由主動(dòng)詞匯沒(méi)有隨二語(yǔ)水平的提高而提高,它的增長(zhǎng)在發(fā)展到一定程度就停滯了。為了進(jìn)一步探索自由主動(dòng)詞匯的停滯問(wèn)題,找到突破“停滯現(xiàn)象”的方法,本書(shū)進(jìn)行了一些列實(shí)證研究。通過(guò)這些實(shí)證研究,作者更加精確、全面地了解了自由主動(dòng)詞匯的發(fā)展規(guī)律和特點(diǎn),探索了“停滯現(xiàn)象”發(fā)生的認(rèn)知原因和教學(xué)原因,并在此基礎(chǔ)上對(duì)如何解決“停滯現(xiàn)象”提出了一系列建議。
