The practice of democratic politics in China is not solely characterized by continuously improving institutional procedures; rather, it is fundamentally rooted in the active participation of the people in both political and social affairs. Primary-level democracy serves as a vital expression of this concept. This book brings together contributions from community-level officials in various cities across different regions of China. Their writings and vivid on-site images recount personal experiences in democratic practices, sharing stories from sub-districts, communities, rural courtyards, and the “12345” citizen hotline. Additionally, a renowned Chinese expert in democracy provides insightful commentary on each article, presenting readers with a rich and multi-layered picture of whole-process people’s democracy. Through these diverse perspectives, readers from around the world will gain a deeper, more accessible understanding of China and its democracy from the ground up.
