繁欽引鳳闕古歌
三輔黃圖
長安城西有雙闕。上有雙銅雀。一鳴五穀成。再鳴五穀熟。An ancient song concerning the two towers that had a pair of bronze peacocks on the west of Chang An city.

元和郡縣圖志
苦泉羊。洛水漿。The water in a spring in Zhao Yi County tastes salty and bitter, but once the sheep drink that water, the milk that they produce tastes like ambrosia.

匈奴為祁連焉支二山歌
十道志逸文
失我焉支山。令我婦女無顏色。失我祁連山。

使我六畜不蕃息。Two folk songs sung by the Xiong Nu tribe concerning their loss of two mountainous areas to the Han empire. The words are: Losing the Yan Zhi mountain left our women to have no lipsticks to use (there were certain plants used as the material for lipsticks in that mountain). Losing Qi Lian mountain left us with no good place for animal grazing.

紇真山頭有神井。入地千尺絕骨冷。

There is a divine well on the top of He Zhen mountain. However, the water there is so cold that itchills to the bones.

鳳陽門內(nèi)天一半。上有金鳳飛相喚。欲去不去著鎖絆。There are two gold pheonixes on the Fong Yang gate. One has flown to the Zhang River, and the other one is fastened by a lock.

There are two rock drums on the Drum mountain of Ci Zhou. One in the north, the other in the south.

When the rock drum is being played, it sounds as though there is an army.

A folk saying concerning the Han mountain in Nan Zheng county. It says that when there are clouds on that mountain, one should not take out one’s dry grains to lend to people, asrain will come with the cloud.

恩惠難置。

A song sung by people of Xiang Yang praising Hu Lei in doing a good job governing their county. His major contribution was the construction of dykes.

If one goes past Da Yu, then one’s bad temperament departs from one. When one drinks water from Shi Men’s Greedy Spring, then one becomes not-greedy.

烏鵲雙飛。不樂鳳凰。妾是庶人。不樂宋王。

A song sung by the wife of a servant of Prince Kang of the Song dynasty, expressing her desirenot to marry him. Being attracted to her, Prince Kang wanted to take her. He killed her husband, but then she would not follow the prince’s will. She hung herself.

晴禹祠。雨龍瑞。Words said by people of Shao Xing about their two scenic spots. When it is a clear day, one should go to the Yu temple. When it is rainy, one should go to Long Rei temple.

Students in the entire school in Hai Ling have the family names of Xu, Zhou and Zha.

Words said by people of Wang Ling about three local men who all had the family name Li, two of them being brothers. They all resigned from their government posts. The words praise them for not being greedy about the money.

A song sung by people of Ba Zhou praising their governor Xue Fong. The words are: I go to farm and come back at dusk. No government official ever visits me. I do not have to lock up my door at night. When I have children, I will name them after Xue Fong.

A poem recited by a Taoist practitioner who was supposedly over three hundred years old, to themayor of Han Yin. The poem says that if one wants to know the essence of the way (Dao, thepath), then one should know that everything starts from the heart. If the heart lives, the bodylives as well.

When the paulownia tree next to the state school grows to be as high as the roof of the school, aperson will win the first place in the civil service test. That prediction came true for Liu Wei.
