注意：English people英格蘭的人；the English=the people of England全體的英格蘭人（集合的名稱）；an Englishman一個英國人。例如：The English belong to the white race.（英國人是白種人。)Those are Englishmen.（那些人是英國人。）

英文的people，race，nation三字都有“民族”的意思，people的含義已如上述；race為種族，即強調(diào)生理方面，具有相同的血統(tǒng)和身體上共同的特征；nation強調(diào)政治上的統(tǒng)一，指在一個政府下團結(jié)一致的人群，例如： Americans are a people and a nation，but not a race.（美國人是一個民族，一個國民，但不是一個種族。）

Hawaiians were a people，not a nation.（從前夏威夷人就是一個民族，可不是一個國家。） 57.復(fù)數(shù)名詞前加用不定冠詞

在上一問的解答中，我們知道普通復(fù)數(shù)名詞后面是可以接不定冠詞的，如The English are a people.但不知在普通名詞的復(fù)數(shù)形前面，能不能也加用不定冠詞？

【解答】在下列四種情形中的復(fù)數(shù)名詞的前面，也可以加用不定冠詞：

（1）在那復(fù)數(shù)名詞的前面，用有g(shù)ood many或great many的字眼時，例如：

I’ve been there a good many times.（我到那里去過好幾次。）

There were a great many students in the street.（街上曾有許多學(xué)生。）

(2）當(dāng)那名詞本身具有復(fù)數(shù)形時，例如：

The place became a shambles.（那地方變成屠殺場。）

注意：shambles=slaughterhouse（屠場），并不是shamble=clumsy walk（蹣跚）的復(fù)數(shù)形，這是完全不相干的兩個字。這個語尾有〔s〕的名詞，前面并不一定要加不定冠詞，如turn cities into shambles（化城市為屠場），但The city has been turned into a shambles.（把那城市變成一個屠場），便要有冠詞了。

（3）當(dāng)名詞的形式雖變成了復(fù)數(shù)，但意義仍是單數(shù)時例如：

A hundred miles is a good distance.（一百英里是相當(dāng)遠的距離。）（a hundred miles意即the distance of a hundred miles.）

A thousand kisses buys my heart from me.（一千個吻足夠收買我的心。)

I am well studied （=inclined） for a liberal thanks which I do owe you.——Shakespeare（我很想要對你表示充分的謝意。）

The Washington，D.C. National Airport is a world crossroads.（華府國家機場是世界的交通要道。)（crossroads歧路或十字路口，并非指幾條路，而是一個有分歧的地點。）

I made a hundred dollars.（我賺了一百塊錢。）

There is a fine Zoological Gardens in our town.（本城有一個很好的動物園。）

What this country needs is not a good fivecent cigar，or a good fivecent cup of coffee，but a good five cents.（這個國家所需要的，不是五分錢一支的好雪茄，也不是五分錢一杯的好咖啡，而是一枚值價的好的五分錢。）

（4）有些名詞原來就是一對或多數(shù)構(gòu)成的，所以復(fù)數(shù)形也是指的單數(shù)，如a pincers，a tongs，a tweezers，a bagpipes，a thicklips等皆是。

He is a slyboots.（他是一個淘氣的孩子）

A sliver scissors was given to him.（給了他一把銀剪刀。）

Here comes a buttons.（來了一個侍役。）
