The Undertaking

I have done one braver thing

Then all the Worthies did,

And yet a braver thence doth spring,

Which is, to keepe that hid.

It were but madnes now t'impart　

The skill of specular stone,

When he which can have learn'd the art,

To cut it, can finde none.

So, if I now should utter this,

Others (because no more　

Such stuffe to worke upon, there is,)

Would love but as before.

But he who lovelinesse within

Hath found, all outward loathes,

For he who colour loves, and skinne,　

Loves but their oldest clothes.

If, as I have, you also doe

Vertue' attir'd in woman see,

And dare love that, and say so too,

And forget the Hee and Shee;　

And if this love, though placed so,

From prophane men you hide,

Which will no faith on this bestow,

Or, if they doe, deride:

Then you have done a braver thing

1. 標題：1633年版無題；1635年版首次加此標題；有些抄本題為“柏拉圖式戀愛”。
2. 西方傳統(tǒng)所謂九大豪杰一般指赫克托爾、亞歷山大、尤力烏斯·愷撒、約書亞、大衛(wèi)、猶大斯·馬卡比、亞瑟、查理曼、布隆尼的戈德弗雷。他們是人們化裝游行時所喜歡扮演的人物。扮演者往往大吹大擂其功勛業(yè)績。故有成績而不張揚則更勝一籌。
3. 5-但恩認為古羅馬時代有一種“透明如玻璃或水晶”（《布道文七》）而“不為我們后世所知”（《致M. H.太太》）的石頭，可以切割成極薄的片，但這需要極高的技巧。據(jù)傳尼祿皇帝曾用以建造幸運神殿。
4. 瀆神者：指精神素質低下，不相信除性欲滿足之外還有基于其它的愛情的人。
