The Wind Has Subsided

(to the tune fo Wu Ling Chun)

by Li Qingzhao (1084-about 1151)

The wind has subsided,

All flowers are gone,

And their scent has mixed with dust.

So late in the morning,

Yet I don't feel like doing my hair.

All things remain what they were,

But human affairs do not,

And all hopes have vanished.

I can't withhold my tears,

Whenever I have to tell my tales.

People say of the spring being still fine at Twin Brooks,

I thought of boating there too.

But the tiny grasshopper boat,

May be too light, I fear,

To carry my heavy load of sorrows.
